How to convert PDF to EPUB
- Choose your PDF, or drag it onto the box above.
- Pick Text or Exact layout, and check the title and author, which are filled in from the PDF.
- Click Create EPUB. The EPUB downloads when it is ready, with the same file name.
Text or exact layout?
A PDF is a set of fixed pages, while an EPUB is meant to reflow to the size of each screen. There are two ways to bridge that:
- Text rebuilds the book as paragraphs and headings, so it reads like any ebook: the lines fit the screen and you can make the letters bigger. It joins words broken by hyphens, removes repeated page headers, footers and page numbers, reads two-column pages in order, and uses the PDF's bookmarks as the table of contents.
- Exact layout keeps every page as it looks in the PDF, pictures and all. It's the only option for scanned PDFs, which contain images of pages rather than text.
If you choose Text and the PDF turns out to be a scan, the converter tells you and switches to Exact layout.
Your file stays on your device
The converter runs entirely in your browser. The PDF is read and turned into an EPUB on your own computer or phone, and nothing is uploaded to a server, which also makes it fast.
Frequently asked questions
Will the formatting be kept?
In Text mode the words, paragraphs and headings are kept, but not the exact fonts, columns or positions, since the text has to reflow. Tables become plain text, and pictures are left out. If the look of each page matters, use Exact layout.
Can I convert a scanned PDF?
Yes, with Exact layout. A scan has no text to reflow, only pictures of pages, so turning it into reflowable text would need OCR (text recognition), which this tool doesn't do.
What about password-protected PDFs?
A PDF that asks for a password to open can't be converted. Remove the password in your PDF app first, if you have the right to.
Can I read the EPUB on a Kindle?
Yes. Send it with Amazon's Send to Kindle, which accepts EPUB, as explained in how to put EPUB books on a Kindle. You can also check the result right away in the online EPUB reader.
Can I fix the title or the cover afterwards?
Yes, with the EPUB metadata editor and the cover changer.
